James recorded this song for the legendary Herbie Hancock’s album called ‘The Imagine Project’, which features many artist from all over the world. “I used to sing it when I was younger, so I enjoyed singing it again. But it’s definitely a lot more daunting when you know that you’re working with someone like Herbie Hancock. It’s pretty scary and exciting at the same time. Classic song.” James recorded the song at RAK Recording Studios in London.
Lyrics
I was born by the river
Oh, in a little tent
Oh just like the river
I’ve been running ever since
It’s been a long
A long time coming
But I know a change is gonna come
Oh yes it will
It’s been too hard living
Oh, but I’m afraid to die
‘Cause I don’t know what’s out there
Beyond the sky
It’s been a long
A long time coming
But I know a change is gonna come
Yes it will
And I go to the movie
And I go downtown
Somebody keep on telling me
Don’t you hang around
It’s been a long
A long time coming
But I know a change isgonna come
Oh yes it will
And I go to my brother
And I said “Brother
Brother won’t you help me please”
But he just winds up knockin’ me down
Back down on my knees
There were times when I thought
I couldn’t last for long
But now I think I’m able
To carry on
It’s been a long
A long time coming
But I know a change is gonna come
Oh yes it will
Yes it will
There’s a time
When I go to my brother
I said “Brother”
I said “Brother, won’t you help me please”
But he just winds up knockin’ me down, down, down
Down on my knees
There were times when I thought
I couldn’t last for long
But now I think I’m able
To carry on
It’s been a long
A long time coming
But I know, but I know, I know, I know
I know a change is gonna come
Oh yes it will
