‘Broken Strings’ features Nelly Furtado. The song was recorded in Canada in early June, 2008. “I actually disregarded this song a while back. I rewrote it three times. It turned out more acoustic, but it was more rocky before. At one point it sounded really wet and I wasn’t feeling it. Then the idea of a duet came and I thought of Nelly Furtado. I was aiming high.”
James has sung this song with quite a few different female artists. He usually performs this song with his backing singer, Beverlei Brown. He has also performed the song with Keisha Buchanan, Girls Aloud, Gabriella Cilmi, various talent show candidates, and Dutch artist Sabrina Starke. In November 2009, he finally performed it with Nelly Furtado, once on a tv show, and once at his gig at Wembley Arena in London. At the shows in the US at the beginning of 2009, he did the song on his own. On the Japanese version of ‘Songs For You, Truths For Me’, you’ll find ‘Broken Strings’, featuring Japanese artist AI, as a bonus track. On her album VIVIA A.I., a remix of the song can be found. And finally, Spanish artist Marta Sánchez has the song on her album ‘De Par En Par’, with her singing the parts. orginally sung by Nelly, in Spanish.
The song has been used in CW’s The Vampire Diaries (s02e16).
