Prior to the release of the album ‘The Awakening, James played ‘In My Dreams’ in his Christmas 2010 video. He also played it at a couple of showcases in European cities in June 2011.
“I can hardly hear it because it affects me that much – I don’t know how I’m going to perform it. I was writing with Dan Wilson, and he asked me what I was feeling at the time. I told him that my dad had recently died and I was hoping he would come into my dreams, but he still hadn’t. And Dan said, “I think you should tap into that”, and as soon as we had the title ‘In My Dreams’ I just got a guitar and it all came out. Musically I wanted it to sound like ‘Up’, like Curtis Mayfield or Stevie Wonder. I wanted it to feel like you’re in a dream when you’re hearing it.
Lyrics
Since you’ve gone
Nothing seems to fit no more
Nothing’s as it was before
And everyday
It’s a battle that I just can’t win
I know I won’t see you again
But I keep waiting for the night
I close my eyes and hope you’ll find me sleeping
Coz, in my dreams
We can spend a little just talking
In my dreams
We’re side by side just walking
Over the fields that we used to know
The places we used to go
Are still there
In my dreams
On the front of the crash bar of your bike
We go any place, anywhere you like
In my dreams
And as hard as it seems
Till then I’ll wait
To see you again
In my dreams
Don’t you wake me up
I don’t wanna go nowhere
I’ve been waiting for a zillion years
You’re gone too soon
I know I’ll never get the chance
To say the things I never said
But I keep waiting for the night
I close my eyes and hope you’ll find me sleeping
Coz, in my dreams
We can spend a little time together
In my dreams
You can live a little longer
Over the fields that we used to know
The places we used to go
Are all still there
In my dreams
On the front of the crash bar of your bike
We go any place, anywhere we like
In my dreams
I hope someday this pain
I feel will fade away
Till then I’ll wait
To see you again
In my dreams
Yes I’ll wait, I’ll wait
To see you again
In my dreams
Yes I’ll wait, I’ll wait
I don’t know where
And I don’t know when
But I know I’ll see your face again
In my dreams
And I don’t know when
But I know I’ll see your face again
In my dreams
Don’t keep me waiting
