‘The Pieces Don’t Fit Anymore’ is a break-up song. James wrote it because after getting his deal, he was very busy and although his girlfriend and him were getting on, he felt like he was in another world. He had doubts about their relationship and thought it might not work. He didn’t want to hurt and felt like he had to leave it rather than wanting to leave it. The song is about letting a relationship go for the best, before any pain comes.
Hollywood wanted to use this song in a movie featuring Robin Williams. The original idea was to have the lead role sing the song, but James didn’t feel comfortable giving his song away and letting someone else sing his song, because it was too personal. He was then offered the role, but turned it down, because he wanted to focus on his music career. ‘The Pieces Don’t Fit Anymore’ has been used in MTV’s The Hills (s02e07).
