James wrote this song for his mother. It says he doesn’t blame her, that he understands it was tough and that he has forgiven her for the past. The song is about his childhood, how he experienced it then and how he feels about it now. The first verse is about him, the second verse about his sister. It was a tough song to write and James knew the words would be difficult. He knew what he wanted to write about, but didn’t have any lyrics. It was a process of writing down ideas and getting his thoughts together. He started with a melody and when he had ‘this boy’, he decided to write about how he felt as a kid, because his childhood is a big part of who he is now.
‘This Boy’ has been used in NBC’s Friday Night Lights (s02e13) and in CW’s One Tree Hill (s04e17).
